REC RECORD IT RIGHT · NEW MINI COURSE

Foley course · Before the station

Record it right.

You have a mic, a few props and the room you have. This course shows you how to get clean, usable Foley out of exactly that, before you build anything.

Everyone on the waitlist gets the lesson Calibrate Your Speakers and my Foley props list free, straight away.

Cue 01// The problem

Bad Foley starts before rec.

Most recordings are decided before you press record. It's easy to edit a good sound. A bad sound can't be rescued with editing.

  • MONITORYour volume changes every session. Calibrate once and stop touching it.
  • LEVELImpacts clip, quiet moves vanish. A reference level and clean gain staging.
  • CHAINYou fix everything in the edit. EQ, transient shaper and compressor set before you record.
  • DISTANCEThe mic is too close, every prop sounds boomy. Mic distance and performance that fit the scene.
  • PROPSYou don't know what to collect. The essential props, and how they work on a real film.
Cue 02// What's inside

Two parts. Two hours.

Recorded on my Foley stage, with the same mic, chain and props I use for paid work.

  • Part 1, setup and recording. Monitoring, levels, chain, mic distance, room and contact mics.
  • Part 2, props. The essential props explained, then used on scenes from a real film.
  • No station needed. A mic, a few props and the room you have.

Look for the sound.

No special gear shop. Start with your household, then the street, flea markets and cheap shops.

Always make sure to not look for the item, but look for the sound.

Cue 04// Who it's for

Before the station.

Starting out

You have a mic, not a stage.

You want to record Foley at home or in your edit suite, with what's already there. No surfaces, no station yet.

Coming from music or post

You know audio, not Foley.

You come from music, editing or sound design and want recordings that are clean before they reach the edit.

Ready for more

Want to build surfaces?

That's the next step: Foley Station Setup. This course comes before it.

Cue 05// Price

Small course. Small price.

Record It Right is the first step, so it costs less than Foley Station Setup.

Bastian Gerner · Foley Artist · Sound Supervisor · Educator

I'm Bastian Gerner, a German Foley artist with more than 15 years in film and AAA game audio. As Senior Foley Artist at Ubisoft Düsseldorf I recorded AAA Foley inside an 11 m² booth for more than four years, on titles including Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Assassin's Creed Nexus VR.

I learned this with mentors on real productions. This course is the part I wish someone had shown me on day one.

Cue 08// Questions

Before you ask.

Do I need a Foley Station for this? +

No. This course comes before the station. You work with a mic, a few props and the room you have.

What do I need? +

A microphone, an audio interface, headphones and a reasonably dry room. It doesn't have to be a perfectly measured studio, but an empty tiled basement won't work.

When does the course open? +

The date isn't set yet. Everyone on the waitlist gets an email when enrollment opens, before anyone else.

What's the free lesson? +

Lesson 1-02, Calibrate Your Speakers. You get it together with the Foley props list right after you confirm your email.

Do you use AI to generate sound? +

No. Everything here is live, performed Foley. That's the whole point.

Get it first.

You get the speaker calibration lesson and my props list right away. When Record It Right opens, the waitlist hears first and gets the sound library included.
